The postseason awards continue to roll in for DeForest graduates Aleah Grundahl and Max Weisbrod.

Weisbrod was recently named the NCAA Division 2 Player of the Year by the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association, while Grundahl was selected as the Division 3 Player of the Year by the WBCA.

The Player of the Year in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference for the past season, Weisbrod, who has starred at Northern Michigan University for the past two years, also recently announced he has entered the transfer portal and is only looking at Division 1 schools, according to a post on X.

Grundahl has played at UW-Whitewater her entire career. She became the leading scorer in school history this past season and was named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year for the third year in a row.

For many years the WBCA has presented awards to college athletes recognizing top players at the Division 1, Division 2, and Division 3 (Public and Private) levels in the state of Wisconsin. Players are eligible if they play at an in-state school or if they played high school basketball in the state.

The WBCA College Awards have continued to expand, and this year will include a Player of the Year for both men and women at each level, but also a Newcomer of the Year and now a College Academic All-State honor.

Like the high school Academic All-State honor, the collegiate award requires that a selected individual have at least a 3.5 GPA.

Weisbrod was also named to the Division II Conference Commissioner’s Association (D2CCA) All-Midwest Region First Team along with the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-District First Team while NMU redshirt sophomore Dylan Kuehl earned a spot on the NABC All-District Second Team.

It was reported on the NMU web site.

Weisbrod received First Team regional honors from both the D2CCA and NABC. After earning GLIAC Freshman of the Year last season, Weisbrod followed it up with GLIAC Player of the Year recognition in year two. He was just the fourth Wildcat to be named conference Player of the Year and the first since Cory Brathol in 2000.

The Green and Gold point guard finished out the season at 17.2 points/game and 4.4 assists/game. He was 84-215 (39.1%) from three and 105-130 (80.8%) from the charity stripe. Weisbrod also had an impressive 2.13 assist to turnover ratio, a top-25 mark in Division II for those with as many assists as Max. In 15 conference games played, he averaged 19.1 points/game including 21.8/game over the final 11 to help the ‘Cats clinch the regular season title. He recorded 24 games in double figures over the 2023-24 campaign. In those 24, he notched 20+ in 12, 25+ in five, and over 30 twice, including a career-high 35 points and seven triples in a 98-66 triumph of Michigan Tech.

The two helped lead the Wildcats to a 22-11 record and 14-4 conference mark that saw the Wildcats earn the program’s first regular season title since 1992-93 and make an NCAA Tournament appearance for the second consecutive season.
