    Baseball: Norskies hold off Beaver Dam for first win

    Despite collecting just two hits, the DeForest baseball team notched its first win of the year, edging Beaver Dam 3-2 on Tuesday, April 9.

    Connor Giese shackled the Golden Beavers’ lineup, fanning 10 and allowing only two hits to get the win. Jacob Heuer and Eli Gavin also pitched for the Norskies (1-2 overall), with Gavin tossing a scoreless frame.

    Kyle Ugalde went 1-for-3, with an RBI. Connor Fox had the other hit for DeForest, as Cullen Kirchberg, Tucker Grundahl and Fox scored runs for the Norskies, who survived the seventh inning. DeForest went into the bottom of the seventh leading 3-0 and fended off Beaver Dam. The Norskies ran for five stolen bases, as Fox collected two.

    The Norskies had a doubleheader on Saturday, April 6, falling to Stevens Point 6-0 and Madison East 11-5.

    East scored 10 runs over the last four innings, rallying from a 5-1 deficit.

    Ugalde and Carter Meyers both went 2-for-4, with an RBI, as Meyers also smacked a double. Going 1-for-3, with a double, an RBI and a run scored, Adam Carr helped lift DeForest’s offense.

    Gavin and Danny Soczka also had hits, as TJ Taylor and Fox both drove in runs. Meyers and Taylor both stole bases.

    Taylor, Gavin, Andrew Herfel and Soczka all pitched for the Norskies, striking out six and walking five. The Norskies committed six errors in the defeat, as only five of the 11 runs they gave up were earned.

    Against Stevens Point, the Norskies were held to one hit. Galvin had the hit.

    Heuer, Kirchberg, Otis Crawford and Herfel all pitched for DeForest, finishing with a combined five strikeouts, three walks and six earned runs.
