“Smithville Select” Square Dancers–a Unique Group
Smithville Select, two-time and reigning Youth Square Dance Champions at the Smithville Fiddlers’ Jamboree who recently made an appearance on the Grand Ole Opry, have been on a long journey in old-time dance leading up to their success in recent years. Two of the current-day members began learning to clog back in 2013 and competed with their first square dance team in 2015, but 7 years would pass before their team began to win any awards. Their story is that of “overnight” successes rarely being overnight.

DeKalb County Gets New TWRA Officer
DeKalb County has a new Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency Officer. Colt Elrod of Cookeville joins longtime TWRA Officer Tony Cross assigned to DeKalb County. Elrod has been a TWRA officer for two years. He and his wife of four years Delaney have a young child, Leo who is only a few weeks old.
Five Local Square Dance Teams to Compete in the 53rd Annual Smithville Jamboree
DeKalb County will have 39 local cloggers across five square dance teams take the stage this Friday and Saturday to compete in the Smithville Fiddlers’ Jamboree. Under the direction of DeKalb county native Mary Ann Puckett, four teams will compete in Youth Square Dance on Friday and one team will compete in Adult Square Dance on Saturday. The local Youth Square Dance teams are the award-winning DeKalb Dancin’ Delights (who took second place at the Wilson County / Tennessee State Fair last August and who placed second last weekend at the Robert Spicer Tennessee State Buck-Dance Championship in Dickson, Tennessee), Center Hill Hoedown, Caney Fork Circle Eights, and Ragland Bottom Roundup. Smithville Select will be competing in Adult Square Dance this year.
Grand Jury Indicts Alexandria Businessman on Four Counts of Forgery
An Alexandria businessman charged in January with four counts of forgery has been indicted by the DeKalb County Grand Jury. 50-year-old Stein Edward Prichard of Brush Creek Road, Brush Creek, manager of Prichard’s Foods, was among 15 people indicted on various charges Monday on the first day of the new term of the grand jury. Others were named in three sealed indictments.
Leadership DeKalb Class of 2024 Graduates
The Leadership DeKalb Class of 2024 attended a graduation celebration held June 18 at Hosanna Farm in Alexandria. They reflected on the past nine months of learning and team building by seeing pictures and retelling stories. Mr. Payten Bailey Cowan
Mr. Payten Bailey Cowan age 33, of the Love Valley Community of DeKalb Co. passed away Monday July 1, 2024 at Sumner Regional Medical Center after a short illness. Mr. Cowan was born February 27, 1991 in Lebanon, TN, son of Robert Glenn (Bobby) Cowan Jr. and Amanda Faye Green Cowan. He was a 2009 graduate of Gordonsville High School. He worked for Green Logging.
