Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell and his current band, The Dirty Knobs, wrapped up their North American tour with a concert in Toronto on Tuesday, July 16. Campbell and his group have now announced plans for a late-summer/early-fall tour with acclaimed alt-country singer/songwriter Lucinda Williams.

The trek, dubbed the Alone and Together: Come Hell or High Water tour, kicks off September 10 in Midland, Texas. It’s mapped out through a September 29 in Del Mar, California. The outing features multiple dates in Texas, California, and Nevada, as well as a show in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The tour’s name includes a reference to “Hell or High Water,” a song on Campbell & The Dirty Knobs new studio album, Vagabonds, Virgins & Misfits. Williams contributed guest vocals to the tune. The shows will feature both acts performing individually and together.

Pre-sale tickets for the concerts are available now. Tickets will go on sale to the general public starting Friday, July 19, at 10 a.m. local time.

Tickets for Williams and Campbell & The Dirty Knobs’ tour dates are available via various outlets, including StubHub.

As with their previous 2024 tour dates, The Dirty Knobs’ upcoming shows will feature longtime Petty & the Heartbreakers member Steve Ferrone on drums. Ferrone joined The Dirty Knobs’ touring lineup because longtime drummer Matt Laug was hired by AC/DC to play on their 2024 world trek.

    About “Hell or High Water”

Campbell recently posted a video on his Instagram page sharing details about “Hell or High Water” and discussing Williams’ contribution to the song.

“[W]hat really made the song for me was my friend Lucinda Williams agreed that she would sing a verse on it,” Campbell explains in the clip. “There’s two characters in the song, the guy and the girl that he meets. So she comes in on the second verse and gives the song a whole new depth and point of view, which was really beautiful. She did a great job. She’s one of my favorite singers of all time.”

Regarding the tune itself, Campbell said it was “a song that I spent a lot of time on the lyrics. There’s characters just like a little movie to me.”

He continued, “There’s a guy who’s out on the road. He’s maybe on a day off. He’s lost at night and he ends up with this woman that he met, and they get drunk and things ensue. Police get involved at some point, and they get stuck in a situation that they want to get out of, hell or high water.”

Campbell added, “I like this song because I think the lyrics have some really clever wordplay. … When I hear it, I can see the movie. I can see what’s going on in the song and stuff.”

Vagabonds, Virgins & Misfits is Campbell & The Dirty Knobs’ third studio album, and was released on June 14. Besides Williams, the features guest appearances by Graham Nash, Chris Stapleton, and founding Petty & the Heartbreakers keyboardist Benmont Tench.
