Perkins 3-run home run helps propel BSM to 6AAA title

Benilde-St. Margaret’s won its sixth section baseball crown with a 6-3 win on June 7 at Delano.

The 2022 state champions open the 2024 state tournament against St. Thomas Academy at 3 p.m. Thursday at Chaska Athletic Park in a rematch of the 2019 state championship game. The Cadets won that meeting 1-0.

The road back to state for BSM (20-3) began with a pair of section home wins over Minneapolis Patrick Henry (20-0 on May 28) before walking off Orono 6-5 with a Robert Shull RBI single in the eighth inning brought in Colin McGie.

Caleb Koskie tied the game with a solo home run to left field in the seventh inning 5-5. Koskie drew two walks and scored three times at the top of the Red Knights order.

Pitcher Connor Armand surrendered two hits and three runs (two earned) over 5 1/3 innings. He struck out nine batters and walked six.

The Red Knights moved on to face Delano on June 1, moving within one win of the section title with a 10-0 win in six innings in Delano.

Behind a three-hit performance by Koskie, BSM pitcher Ford Stoen limited Delano to three hits of shutout pitching through six innings. He walked four and struck out four.

The two teams met on the same field on June 6. This time Delano came out on top 2-0 to force a winner-take-all final.

Armand started for BSM allowing one run on four hits across five innings. He struck out nine batters and issued two walks.

Charlie Gearen and Rowan Dodge picked up the hits for the Red Knights. Gearen and Koskie each drew two walks along with one for Armand.

The section final opened with Max Perkins launching a three-run home run in the second inning of what would be a 6-3 win for BSM.

Armand and Jack Ortale added RBI singles in the third inning to extend the lead.

Koskie took the win on the mound in three innings of relief work. He allowed four hits without a run with two strikeouts. Stoen was the starter scattering three runs on five hits in three innings.
