Amid intense heat, Delaware County offers free box fans to seniors in need 01:58
EDDYSTONE, Pa. (CBS) — Delaware County is stepping up its efforts to keep seniors safe in the intense heat . Feel-like temperatures in the Philadelphia region reached 100 degrees Wednesday ahead of a severe storm risk at night.
County leaders announced plans Wednesday to give away 100 free fans to seniors in need.
"The fans that will be given to the seniors in Delaware County were purchased from a veteran-owned business, Hardware & Supply Company of Chester," PECO external affairs manager Michele Garrity said. "So, we're very happy to be supporting a local business and a veteran-owned business."
Volunteers loaded the fans into a county van. Some fans were brought to Schoolhouse Senior Center in Folsom.
"It's a great program for the seniors to have in the heat, especially with no air conditioning," Schoolhouse Senior Center director Jessica Hadfield said.
Clare Zimmer from Chester was among the seniors who received a free fan. She said she plans to use it on her patio to keep cool while drinking her coffee in the morning.
"I'm very thankful," Zimmer said. "I really appreciate the fan."
Delaware County residents age 60 and older can pick up a free fan with ID from any of these eight senior centers funded by COSA.
