Flags are lowered to half-staff in Delaware on Wednesday to recognize National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day, Gov. John Carney announced.

Flags are currently at half-staff through this week to honor Thomas “Tommy” Berry III, a 23-year-old logistic technician for Sussex County’s Emergency Medical Services and a volunteer firefighter/EMT with Georgetown and Ellendale fire companies. He died Aug. 13 after stopping to help a driver who had crashed into a utility pole on Route 9.

National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day is dedicated to educating the public on the serious dangers of fentanyl poisoning from fake pills and other illicit drugs, according to the DEA.

How about investing in a quality rehabilitation center with long term residential stay were people who voluntarily admit can go and feel safe and not like the are in jail. Creat an environment conducive to recovery and reeducation. Flags at half staff do not do anything for the users.... they don't even see them.

What a disservice to the "honor" offered to acknowledge Tommy Berry's ultimate sacrifice in service to the citizens of Delaware. Was it really necessary to piggyback drug abuse awareness? Isn't everyone already aware?
