We ask Delaware high school football players to dream up their perfect NIL deal

As high school football players and coaches cycled through the halls of Odessa High at the Delaware Online High School Football Media Day last week, among the fresh topics posed to them was the specter of NIL deals in high school sports.

Over the last year, the DIAA has laid the groundwork to allow high school players to make deals with businesses using their name, image and likeness. The deals often come in the form of social media posts or appearances with payment made in equipment, apparel, meals, discounts or monetary payments.

Delaware is set to join more than 30 other states in allowing NIL deals for high school athletes.

There are several "guardrails" in place to keep schools and their supporters from taking advantage. Most notably, the DIAA regulation says "a student may earn compensation from the use of their name, image and likeness provided that the compensation is not contingent on specific athletic performance or achievement, is not provided as an incentive to enroll or remain enrolled at a specific school, and is not provided by the school or any person acting as an agent for the school."

Any agreement can not include the DIAA's or a school's name, colors, logos, mascots or acronyms, including on the student's apparel and school facilities can not be involved.

If neighboring states are any indication, there likely won't be a cascade of NIL deals for Delaware athletes (In July, we explored some of the limiting factors .) But we decided to have some fun and ask the athletes at media day which brand they would do an NIL deal with in a dream world. Their responses are captured in the video above.
