McDonald's Collector's Cups spark sales frenzy. Cups list for up to $1K on Ebay

When McDonald's introduced its new line of collector cups earlier this month, it caused a rush to the fast-food restaurant.

The introduction of the cups, much like the introduction of Teenie Beanie Babies in the 1990s and early 2000s, created a hot market for collectors.

What are McDonald's Collectors Cups?

On Aug. 13, McDonald's dropped a set of six collector cups that paid tribute to McDonald's previous giveaways. The cups were decorated with:

• Barbie & Hot Wheels
• Beanie Babies
• Coca-Cola images
• Hello Kitty & Peanuts
• Shrek, Jurassic Park and Minions
• McDonald's characters

You got the cups with the purchase of a Collector's Meal. The McDonald's breakfast Collector’s Meal includes with a sausage and egg sandwich, hash browns and a hot coffee. A lunch and dinner Collector’s Meal has more options. You can choose from a 10-piece nugget or Big Mac, along with fries and a drink.

Where can I get McDonald's Collector's Cups?

The cups are available at McDonald's, but they are given out in blue bags randomly so you have no idea which cup you will receive. For collectors, it's difficult to buy five Collector's Meals and get three Barbie & Hot Wheels cups and two McDonald's cups. Collectors want to get full sets and while the food is fun and good, there's only so much McDonald's food a person can eat.

Where can you get a full set of McDonald's Collector's Cups?

If you don't want to go to McDonald's every day, there is a way to get a full set of cups, but it's going to cost you.

Those fortunate enough to get full sets or have extras of a particular cup have already gone to eBay to sell the cups. The full set of cups is selling on eBay and can be purchased from $40 to $1,000. Some auctions start at $1 plus shipping but still have two days to go in the auction. Another auction, as of 1:15 p.m. on Aug. 20, had 22 bids and the last bid was $152.50 plus shipping.

Will McDonald's Collector's Cups retain value?

The cups are a fad, and fads tend to fade away.

Consider the McDonald's Teenie Beanie Babies from 1996. While people went bonkers to get the toys 28 years ago, now you can get a full set of 34 toys for $40 plus shipping on eBay. You can get individual toys for $1 plus shipping.

For cups in general, you can search for everything from McDonald's plastic Phillies cups, Julius Erving cups or 1992 Olympic Dream Team cups and most aren't more than a few dollars plus shipping on eBay.

Even the old promotional glasses from the 1970s – made from real glass and painted – are only selling for $10 to $20 plus shipping on eBay.
