Boil water advisory lifted in Lewes, water main break discovered

The Lewes Board of Public Works has lifted the boil water notice issued Tuesday.

The results of testing on water samples were clear, the board said in a statement, and residents no longer need to boil water. However, some areas near the beach may still experience low water pressure.

The board first notified residents of potential water contamination Tuesday morning. A drop in pressure could have resulted in back-flow, the board's first statement said, potentially allowing disease-causing microbes into the system. They attributed the drop in pressure to a "possible communication error."

Later Tuesday, the board issued an update saying a 12-inch water main break was discovered on a canal-crossing pipe.

The boil water advisory was lifted Wednesday morning after testing results were received. The broken pipe is still out of service, which may cause beach-area customers to experience low water pressure, another statement said.

"A dive team will be on-site today to evaluate the water main and determine the necessary repairs," the statement said.

Anyone with questions should contact the Board of Public Works at 302-645-6228.
