Mondegreen hotel controversy, UD move-in weekend, a presidential milkshake

    Howdy, Delawareans.

Go top off that coffee cup, I can wait …

OK, so I know you are a little sleepy when you read these Daily Briefings as not a single one of you called me out yesterday when I mistakenly called a plain-old Wednesday … Throwback Thursday. Oops.

Now it really is Thursday, so here is a look back at the wildest scenes from Firefly 2012-2018.

One reason we might be tired is that between the Olympics, two major party conventions, West Coast and Phillies games, we’re not getting as much sleep this summer. If you were awake and paying attention this week, you may have spotted this: Biden and Harris drink Charcoal Pit milkshakes Monday at Democratic National Convention.

It may be a little harder to nab a parking space in Newark: Students are coming back. What to know about University of Delaware move-in weekend . Have a great year, Blue Hens!

    And now, more news …

This hotel blamed Dover Air Force Base for Mondegreen room cancellations. It wasn't true

Wyndham Gardens hotel representatives said this week that the reasons given for canceling reservations for Phish fans heading to Delaware for a four-day music festival were untrue.

When the Wyndham Garden hotel in Dover canceled the reservations, reports Ryan Cormier, hotel representatives initially placed the blame on the Dover Air Force Base. Hotel representatives told customers their reservations – made nearly a year ago and canceled just days before the start of the Mondegreen festival – were pulled because of the hotel's contract with the military to house personnel when rooms are requested.

The same was told to Delaware Online/The News Journal when hotel officials were asked about the last-minute cancellations, Ryan writes.

Some festivalgoers now accuse the chain of price-gouging and are filing claims with the Delaware Department of Justice, Ryan reports. Read more here.

    Fatal shooting database

49 people have been killed and 154 were wounded by gun violence in Delaware in the past 365 days.

In 2017, Delaware Online/The News Journal began to log every shooting that is reported in the state, as there was and continues to be no public database of these acts of violence. Since our tracking began, there have been more than 1,100 shootings.

The data comes from our reporting and police statements. The amount of information released for each victim varies, as does the information released on shooting incidents and how quickly it reaches the public. This database is meant to serve as a public tool for measuring violence throughout the state and trends occurring in our communities. Police are not meant to be the only source, though, and Delaware Online is committed to verifying information and getting out into the communities in which this violence occurs.

Police do not typically release the names of nonfatal shooting victims. The identities of homicide victims are usually made public, but there are a few incidents where this is not the case. Delaware Online is determined to tell the stories of these victims and what happened in their lives beyond this violence. If you’ve got feedback or would like to talk more about our criminal justice strategy, reach out to Brittany Horn, regional editor for crime and social justice, at bhorn@delawareonline.com. You will find our gun violence database here.
