It's gonna be ruff: Delaware Park to host special dog race, adoption event on Saturday

Delaware Park has been conducting live thoroughbred horse racing since 1937.

On Saturday, the dogs are taking over.

The horses will be running, as usual, with the first post time on the seven-race card set for 12:30 p.m.

But dogs provided by Faithful Friends Animal Society near New Castle will be on the grounds for a Bark at the Park adoption event from 1 to 4.

And following the fifth race for horses – at 2:30 – eight of those pups will take to the track for their own race.

The canines will battle it out down the front stretch near the finish line, with the top three finishers receiving baskets with treats, toys, bowls and leashes in the winner’s circle.

And yes, just as with the horses, you can bet on it. With a twist.

Each of the eight dogs in the race will have biographical information displayed on monitors, with their potential strengths and weaknesses discussed by a handicapping expert.

Fans can pick their favorite dog to win, place or show. If your selection is a good boy and outruns the others, you’ll win slot dollars for use in the adjoining casino.

Also, fans who donate $10 or more to Faithful Friends will receive $20 in slot dollars. The offer is valid only on Saturday.

Free canine flying discs will be given away while supplies last. And, of course, you can adopt a dog while you’re there.

Finally, the dog theme will be fully unleashed with a special hot dog stand, which will open at 11:30 a.m.

Fans can build their own hot dogs with up to three toppings for $8, or three for $20. Toppings include chili, onions, Fritos, Cheetos, jalapenos, pickles, olives, scallions, relish, cheese, bacon, 1937 House Chips, black beans and diced tomatoes.

    Sounds pretty doggone good.
