This is when Thomas Berry III's funeral will be held and today's expected traffic impacts

Funeral services for Thomas Berry III, the Sussex County firefighter who died last week while aiding a motorist who had crashed, will be held Thursday afternoon.

A fourth-generation Ellendale firefighter who also volunteered with Georgetown's fire department and was a county EMS technician, Berry will receive full firefighter honors.

Line of Duty Death services are marked in traditions, from tolling a bell for a firefighter's last alarm call to dispatching the person's death over the radio in a final call to duty.

Traditionally, the bell is tolled three times, with three tolls per ring, as a tribute to the original days of firefighting when the tolling of a bell marked the start and end of a shift, the call to service or the death of a firefighter. This is often known as the "last alarm."

Emergency responder vehicles also accompany a funeral procession, often stretching for miles and shuttering roads. The procession typically draws community members to the roadside to pay their respects.

A GUIDE: How firefighters send fallen first responders 'home'

What will Berry's funeral look like?

Residents can expect a procession of first responder and emergency units on Thursday afternoon following Berry's funeral.

A viewing will first be held at Crossroad Community Church in Georgetown. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with funeral services to follow.

After the service, Berry's casket will be escorted from the church to Georgetown Fire Company, then to the county's public safety complex, then to Ellendale Volunteer Fire Company. Interment will be at Ellendale Cemetery along Ponder Road.

How and when will traffic be impacted?

Traffic impacts to the Georgetown and Ellendale areas are expected to be "significant" Thursday afternoon, a Sussex County news release said.

Certain roads will be particularly clogged and others will be shut down all together between 2 p.m. and at least 5 p.m. Sign boards with detour information will be placed along the procession route, which includes Route 113 (Dupont Boulevard), Route 18/404 (Seashore Highway), as well as "numerous" side streets in both communities.

Those looking to line the route may have the best chance on Market Street in Georgetown, near the fire company. Main Street in Ellendale by the firehouse may also be accessible by coming from the west.
