A 36-year-old man who struck an officer as he fled a crime scene late Saturday in Bear has been found and charged, New Castle County Police said Sunday.

Two officers who fired their weapons after police said the man struck one of them with the fleeing car have been placed on administrative leave. The officers, a 12- and 3-year member of the department, were not injured during the incident.

The man, from the Wilmington area, had not been arraigned as of 7:30 a.m. Monday, according to VineLink which lets people check on offenders' custody statuses. Police said the man faces several charges including four counts of first-degree reckless endangering and second-degree assault.

Officers responded to the first block of Augustine Place in the community of Crofton about 11:40 p.m. Saturday for an assault in progress, said Cpl. Richard Chambers, a police spokesperson.

As Officers approached the scene, the man fled in his vehicle, colliding with a car and several police SUVs, Chambers said.

As the man fled, he struck a police officer, prompting that officer and an assisting officer to fire their division-issued firearms, Chambers said.

The man continued driving until his vehicle was disabled a short distance away, at which point he fled on foot. Officers searched for the man, but were unable to find him.

Investigators were able to identify the man and on Sunday found him and arrested him.

"It was determined he was not struck by the officer's gunfire," Chambers said. "However, he had sustained injuries during the initial altercation, which caused police to be summoned to the home."

The investigation into the officers’ use of force is being conducted by the Delaware Department of Justice's Division of Civil Rights and Public Trust and county police.

Police ask anyone who witnessed or has video footage of the incident to contact Detective Eric Christopher at (302) 395-8230 or via email at Eric.Christopher@newcastlede.gov . The public can also reach the New Castle County Division of Police’s non-emergency number at (302) 573-2800.
