Delaware NBA star Donte DiVincenzo going to Minnesota in Karl-Anthony Towns deal: Report

Donte DiVincenzo is on the move again as the Salesianum School and Villanova star is getting traded from the New York Knicks to the Minnesota Timberwolves as part of a blockbuster deal in which the Knicks are getting Karl-Anthony Towns.

The pending deal was reported late Friday night by ESPN.

For DiVincenzo, it's his fifth team since the start of the 2021-22 season, and it comes just as NBA training camps are set to begin this coming week.

DiVincenzo had signed a four-year contract worth nearly $50 million with the Knicks in the summer of 2023, and proceeded to have his best season in his career that began in 2018 when he was the Milwaukee Bucks' first-round pick.

But DiVincenzo is going to a young, talented Timberwolves team, led by Anthony Edwards that reached the Western Conference finals last season.

DiVincenzo, of course, won a state championship at Salesianum, an NCAA title at Villanova and an NBA championship with the Bucks.

DiVincenzo was traded from the Bucks to Sacramento during the 2021-22 season, then he spent the 2022-23 with Golden State before going to the Knicks.

DiVincenzo averaged a career-high 15.5 points per game, and he was also third in the NBA in 3-pointers with 283. What's more, DiVincenzo was ecstatic playing close to his family in Delaware for the first time in his career, and with two of his teammates at Villanova in Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart. During the summer, the Knicks had traded for a fourth Villanova player in Mikal Bridges.

DiVincenzo, Brunson and Hart helped the Knicks beat the 76ers in the first round of the NBA playoffs. In fact, DiVincenzo hit the game-winning 3-pointer with 13.1 seconds left in Game 2 in the Knicks' 104-101 win.

DiVincenzo helped the Knicks close out the series with 23 points in Game 6. DiVincenzo played the entire game.

"Going into the first round, we knew it was going to be an uphill battle. It was back and forth between the teams," DiVincenzo said. "You outwork them, you stay together, and this is what happens."

DiVincenzo was a key part of that, as Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau pointed out after the Knicks played the Sixers in February. DiVincenzo took on a bigger scoring load after injuries to key Knicks players such as Julius Randle, who was included in the trade to Minnesota.

"He’s been terrific. Terrific," Thibodeau said. "I think this is probably his best stretch of basketball. He’s letting it fly. There’s no hesitation. We need high-volume threes, and he’s providing that. He’s taking 14, 15 threes in a game, and he’s shooting it very efficiently. He’s taking good shots. ... We needed his scoring."

Now the Timberwolves will get it.
