‘What’s Your Question, Shannon?’ Democratic Senator Gets Testy With Fox Anchor Over Crime and Border

Delaware Democrat and Biden surrogate Chris Coons on Sunday was momentarily testy when anchor Shannon Bream spoke to him about crimes committed by people who are in the country illegally, an issue on which President Joe Biden has regularly faltered in polling.

On the most recent edition of Fox News Sunday , Bream spoke with Coons at length on the subject of the southern border, a top campaign issue in 2024.

After showing a clip from a Fox News interview with Gov. Wes Moore of Maryland, a Democrat, in which he lamented the murder of Rachel Morin as being a direct result of bad border policy, Bream asked Coons about why more can’t or hasn’t been done.

As Coons began to blame Republicans because of the now-dead bipartisan border bill that was before congress earlier this year, Bream interrupted to point out that none of what was in it would have prevented this death or the other recent spate of terrible crimes committed by criminals who came across the border illegally.

“You can’t assume that every person seeking asylum in this country is going to commit a crime, Shannon,” said the seemingly irritated Democrat.

“Correct,” Bream agreed, pointing out that, “It only matters that it’s one.”

As Coons started to object, Bream added, “I mean, when it’s an American life…”

After an awkward pause, Coons said, “What’s your question, Shannon?” and she answered him by saying that the problem is that the current policy doesn’t prevent such events, to which Coons then agreed and said “we need to get control of our border.”

He then brought up Donald Trump and January 6 before they moved on to another topic.

COONS : It was a bipartisan solution ready for us to take it up and pass…

BREAM : But it would not have stopped these people who are in a number of these recent cases.

COONS : And I heard from colleagues in the Senate on both sides Shannon, that they were ready to vote for that deal after months of hard work crafting a real bipartisan solution.

BREAM : It still would have allowed thousands of people into this country, whether they showed up and were just let in because of detention issues, which, you know, we know there are empty ICE beds, we know that there are problems with funding, but also the CBP One app would have allowed a lot of these folks in. So, when we talk about these recent crimes and gosh we’ve had a list, they are tragic. Nobody wants them to happen. But that legislation would not have stopped those people from coming into this country.

COONS : You can’t assume that every person seeking asylum in this country is going to commit a crime, Shannon.

BREAM : Correct.

COONS : And in fact –.

BREAM : It only matters that it’s one. I mean, when it’s an American life…

COONS : What’s your question, Shannon?

BREAM : Well, the question is if — and we know the vast majority of people coming here are simply seeking a better life or asylum from a dangerous situation at home. But because the situation has become so porous at the border, it does allow for bad actors. And whether it’s 5 or 10 or 15, these are American lives that have been devastated because of them being able to manipulate and leverage the system as it now exists.

COONS : I agree, Shannon, we need to get control of our border.
