    Delaware students bring home future health professionals honors

    More than 140 students and advisors from across Delaware joined more than 12,000 other members at the 47th annual HOSA-Future Health Professionals International Leadership Conference in Houston June 26-29.

    Delaware students represented the First State in competitive events that included: medical math, public health, behavioral health, and community awareness.

    Delaware HOSA is a career and technical student organization dedicated to students who are interested in pursuing a career in healthcare. Through HOSA-Future Health Professionals, members can participate in career focused competitive events, take part in community service work, and become leaders for the organization in their school, state, and at the international level.

    HOSA-Future Health Professionals incorporates curricular and co-curricular experiences to emphasize the importance of knowledge, leadership, skill development, and teamwork.

    The following students and advisors were recognized in their competitive events:

    • Physical Therapy: Gold — Alicia Guajardo, Sussex Technical High School. Advisor Carolyn Maull
    • Dental Terminology: Top 10 — Sudipa Chowdhury, Newark Charter School. Advisor Melanie Mundell
    • Emergency Medical Technician: Top 10 — Heidi Thompson and Brayden Fields, St. Georges Technical High School. Advisor Jennifer Immediato
    • Epidemiology: Top 10 — Akshaj Bais, Newark Charter School. Advisor Melanie Mundell
    • Human Growth and Development: Top 10 — Arjun Bharath, Middletown High School. Advisor Deb Otto
    • Interviewing Skills: Top 10 — Maria Pulido, Sussex Central High School. Advisor Christine Frazier
    • Medical Assisting: Top 10 — Rocio Garduno Castaneda, Delcastle High School. Advisor Jessica Henry
    • Outstanding HOSA Achievement: Lindsay D’Ambrogi, Kyli Doyon-Baridon, Emily McCullough, and Lily Joyce from Cape Henlopen High School. Advisor Linda Sapienza
    • Barbara James Service Award: Gold — Claire Keach, Newark Charter School. Silver — Carter Porter, Indian River High School. Bronze — Aanya Gupta, Newark Charter School. Bronze — Arjun Bharath, Middletown High School. Bronze — Michelle Zhou, Newark Charter School. Bronze—Conner Jackson, Newark Charter School.
    • ABC Blood Drive Recognition: Bronze—Sussex Technical High School.

    The HOSA Outstanding Achievement Award is in recognition of the work performed in partnership with the Delaware Department of Public Health in creating a public health display and sharing valuable information about a specific public health concern or issues.
