Platteville Airport petitioning for funding
Platteville Municipal Airport is seeking state and federal funds to pursue future projects. Potential improvements include repairing and extending runways, as well as fixing and constructing equipment buildings and t-hangars. However, not all of the projects are likely to occur. To be eligible for funding, the city needs to petition Wisconsin Secretary of Transportation Craig Thompson. The petition was discussed this week at the Common Council meeting and will be voted on Aug. 13. Per state law, the document needs to list all potential projects that funding would be used for, even if they have a “remote” possibility of occurring. If the airport received funding, they would prioritize constructing a building to house snow removal equipment and repairing the runways to ensure their markings are fresh and visible to pilots landing at night. The airport is used for flight training, recreational flying and as a base for crop-dusting planes, among other uses. It also leases nearby land to farmers and hosts events.

Shanley entered Highway 151 directly into the path of a southbound semi tractor and trailer being operated by 59-year-old Henry Chamberlain of Fort Atkinson. Chamberlain braked and swerved, but could not avoid a collision with Shanley’s vehicle. Shanley’s vehicle received severe damage and the semi sustained moderate damage, both were towed. The semi operator was not injured in the crash. Shanley was transported via ambulance to Southwest Health Center in Platteville and was later transferred to a Madison area Hospital for further treatment of possible serious injuries. Dickeyville EMS, the Dickeyville Fire Department, Jamestown Fire Department, Jamestown First Responders, the Dickevyille Police Department, the Cuba City Police Department, the Grant County Highway Department, Donnie’s Tire and Auto, and Kieler Service Center assisted at the scene.

Clouds & Showers Overnight, More Storms Sunday and Monday
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - Mostly cloudy skies remain over eastern Iowa as a few scattered showers form late tonight and early Sunday morning. You might notice over the next couple of days that the sky is a bit hazy and has a grayish-white color to it. That’s because we’re still dealing with wildfire smoke in our upper atmosphere from Canadian and western wildfires. While this smoke will give us vibrant colors in our sunrises/sunsets and hazy skies during the day, it will stay thin and elevated through the weekend. Therefore, air quality impacts are expected to be minimal. You can always check the latest air quality measurements on KCRG.com. Mostly cloudy skies linger through the overnight hours as lows drop into the upper 60s and low 70s. A few scattered showers are expected to form late tonight and early Sunday morning.

Rural Hospitals Built During Baby Boom Now Face Baby Bust
Rural regions like the one surrounding this southern Iowa town used to have a lot more babies, and many more places to give birth to them. At least 41 Iowa hospitals have shuttered their labor and delivery units since 2000. Those facilities, representing about a third of all Iowa hospitals, are located mostly in rural areas where birth numbers have plummeted. In some Iowa counties, annual numbers of births have fallen by three-quarters since the height of the baby boom in the 1950s and ’60s, when many rural hospitals were built or expanded, state and federal records show.
