What are key races with local impact in 2024 General Election? It goes beyond president

While much of the attention during this election year is focused on presidential campaigns, the Eastern Shore is still grappling with key races for Congress and Senate, plus in Wicomico County, a charter amendment referendum.

Here's a look at the key races impacting the Lower Shore.

The future of the Wicomico county executive post

Wicomico County residents can vote on a charter amendment that, if approved, will do away with the county executive form of government in favor of a county council-centered structure that will also feature an administrative director.

According to the ballot, "a revision of the Charter of Wicomico County to change from an elected Executive form of government to an elected County Council form of government in which the County Council is vested with both the executive and the legislative functions of government, together with an appointed Administrative Director to act as chief administrative officer of the County."

So, a yes vote on the ballot would be in favor of eliminating the position of county executive.

The new form of government without a county executive would begin on Dec. 1, 2026, if approved by the public.

Hogan's entry into the race came as a surprise after he had said in February 2022 that he had no interest in running for Senate, despite calls from national Republicans.
