Five people have been arrested after a two-year investigation called “Operation Checkmate.”

Delray Beach Police identified the ring leader of a group of mail thieves as 21-year old Jordan St. Val of Boynton Beach. He and four others, all in their twenties, have been taken into custody on charges of racketeering and fraudulent use of personal identification information.

Police say the group would rob letter carriers at gunpoint and steal their arrow key, which enabled them to open cluster mailboxes and collection boxes. They were in search of checks and are accused of ripping off more than 2,000 victims to the tune of over a $1 million.
