Northwest Ohio Rib Off continues with more tasting, music
On a picture perfect weather day Saturday, with temperatures in the low 80s, a light breeze, and hardly a cloud in the sky, Dennis Scherger would normally be tending to a vegetable patch in his backyard. Instead, Mr. Scherger, 72, of Whitehouse, and his wife, Sandy, spent four hours volunteering Saturday at The Blade’s 40th annual Northwest Ohio Rib Off, checking admission tickets as they greeted visitors with a smile at the event entrance gate at the Lucas County Fairgrounds in Maumee. The Schergers were among 175 volunteers at the Rib Off on Saturday, with a total of about 400 volunteering during the weekend. The money they raise is to be transferred directly to their affiliated organizations, such as area churches, schools, and clubs, according to event organizers. “This is what we’re doing today,” Mr. Scherger said. “It feels good, because we get to help with our church youth activities raising money for a summer camp fund.”

Outdoors: As late summer approaches, area archery courses can help you tune up for deer
Some outdoor enthusiasts are counting down the days to the season’s opening day like Christmas. Their Christmas morning will be here in a couple months — archery begins Saturday, Sept. 28, in Ohio; and Tuesday, Oct. 1, in Michigan. Meanwhile, what to do? Staying in good physical shape is important to keep your muscles toned to shoot archery gear, as well as having your bow tuned, arrows cut to the right size, and sights in working order — if you use sights. I shoot instinctive when I use my recurve, so no sights are needed.

Just plein cool: Sylvania Plein Air Festival celebrates spur-of-the-moment art
Sylvania will soon be awash with painting as the second annual Sylvania Plein Air Festival begins Sunday and runs through the following week. The purpose of plein air, which translates from French as “painting outdoors” is to capture the majesty of the great outdoors on location. No painting in an artist studio, it’s about getting outside and painting what you see in front of you. The lighting of the sky, the position of the sun, everything. It’s about capturing one glorious moment in the medium of paint and brush. Katie Cappellini, executive director of Red Bird Sylvania, which is hosting the festival, said that response to the event from artists all over North America has been huge. “Plein air is making a huge comeback nationally and somehow we tapped into that movement and we have artists coming from all over the country and Canada to paint Sylvania, it was limited to 125 and that filled up in April.”
