At the last City Council meeting, Councilor Klarissa Peña proposed an amendment to change the way salary increases work so all councilors receive a raise at the same time. Currently, some make more than others after the Citizens’ Independent Salary Commission — the commission that determines their salaries — decided last year that councilors needed a raise.
Artesia named top-10 place to raise a family
Your browser does not support the audio element. Artesia ranks eighth on the “Best Places to Raise a Family in New Mexico” according to Niche.com. The 2024 report gave the town an “A-” overall score, taking into account categories including schools, housing and weather. Artesia scored an A+ in jobs, and an A in public schools and in diversity. The lowest score for Artesia is a C+ for Crime and Safety.
LANL: Raymond Newell Named Los Alamos’ Battelle Inventor of the Year For Quantum Research Applied To Cryptosystems

Raymond Newell, a research scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory, was recently named Battelle’s Inventor of the Year for Los Alamos. The annual award recognizes inventors from Battelle and from Battelle-managed laboratories, including Brookhaven National Laboratory, Idaho National Laboratory, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Newell was honored in May at the Celebration of Solvers ceremony at Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, Ohio.

City of Gallup to mill streets starting July 8
The City of Gallup will be closing some streets around the city starting July 8. The project is expected to go on until July 26. Princeton Avenue from McKinley Drive to the end of the curb and Wilson Avenue from McKinley Drive to a dead end will be milled during that time. The mining is in advance of paving that will happen at a later date.

Pet of the Week: Meet Loki!
Loki was actually adopted from the McKinley County Humane Society two years ago, but his owner recently surrendered him back to the shelter. The shelter staff said he has no behavioral problems at all. He is a very sweet and smart dog. He loves going on walks and is great on a leash as well.
