Battle of Class A unbeatens tops Section V's top games: Vote for who you think will win

Every other week we take a look at Section V Class A football , a place to find a crowded race to get into the high school postseason.

After all the action in Week 5 and before games on Thursday kickoff Week 6, it is time to see what 15 teams trying to jam into a tournament field of eight looks like at this point of the eight-game regular season.

Teams are listed in alphabetical order, since the strength of schedule - how your opponents perform - also is a factor in the sectional standings.

    • Undefeated : Brighton, Canandaigua and Irondequoit.
    • Looking good : Brockport and East High/World of Inquiry have one loss.
    • In the mix : Churchville-Chili (2-3), Greece Athena (2-3), Monroe (3-2), Spencerport (1-4), Victor (1-4), Webster Schroeder, (2-3), Webster Thomas (2-3), Wilson (1-4).
    • Need win No. 1 : Gates Chili and Greece Arcadia.

Thursday is the spotlight day this week, including two matchups involving Class A teams.

Vote below for who you think will win. Polls will close at 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Last week, readers were 3-0 on their picks and are now 12-3 on the season.

    Brighton (5-0) at Irondequoit (5-0), 6 p.m. Thursday

Brighton's run game grinds on to wins with senior and 2023 Democrat and Chronicle All-Greater Rochester Large Schools Team member Gavin Parks as the main ballcarrier. He has gained an average of 159 yards per game and scored a total of 14 touchdowns for the Bruins.

The Irondequoit Eagles, based on final scores, appeared to have an easy time until last week. A rally in the fourth quarter pushed Irondequoit past Victor. Irondequoit senior quarterback Taiden Makubire delivers in key moments throughout games, not just in fourth quarters. Cameron Freeman , a running back and linebacker in his senior year, has been a force on offense and defense for the Eagles.

    Vote now:

    Fairport (5-0) at Hilton (4-1), 7 p.m. Thursday

This is a clash between teams in Class AA. Fairport has the better record, but this is a chance for the Red Raiders to take a big step toward claiming a stamp as a Section V title contender. Only one of Fairport's opponents have scored more than 14 points, and the Red Raiders on homecoming week defeated Aquinas 21-20. Fairport has run the football to make it to the end zone . Noah Remington , a senior, is emerging as another productive ballcarrier for Fairport, joining senior Bailey Frank .

The Hilton Cadets and their coach Rich Lipani know about running the football to win. John DiBattisto has led the charge, when the Cadets want to move that way. But sophomore quarterback Matthew Kosiorek had two touchdown passes and 171 yards throwing the ball last week during a 22-19 win over University Prep. Tyler Reger , a sophomore who also plays running back and is a kicker at Hilton, made a 31-yard field goal with five seconds remaining against UPrep.

    Vote now:

    East High/World of Inquiry (4-1) at Brockport (4-1), 6 p.m. Thursday

Another matchup in Class A to circle. East/World of Inquiry has won four games in a row, including two shutouts by the defense led by senior linebacker Jeremiah Tucker . East/World of Inquiry senior quarterback Tyler Benjamin connected on two throws downfield for touchdowns that covered 55-plus yards last week against Wilson.

The Brockport Blue Devils get another chance against one of Section V's better teams. They have put together back-to-back wins since a loss to Monroe at Brockport. Blue Devils quarterback Landon Scott has six touchdown passes over the last two weeks. The Brockport defense versus the East/Word of Inquiry offense is a matchup within the game to watch.
