A man was charged this week in connection with a 2020 homicide, according to Rochester police.

Jalen Reed, 31, of Rochester was charged Monday with second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, both felonies, in connection with the April 29, 2020 shooting death of Nathan L. Bernard , 32, on Genesee Street, said Capt. Greg Bello of the Rochester Police Department.

Bernard was shot around 7:45 p.m. on April 29, 2020. Officers were called to 197 Genesee St., across the road from the Wilson Foundation Academy, after it was reported that several shots were fired in the area, according to Rochester police. Officers found Bernard, unconscious and bleeding, on the ground. He was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Bello said that Bernard was standing on the sidewalk with several others when he was shot. Reed is accused of approaching the group and firing multiple rounds from a handgun at Bernard, who according to police, was his intended target.

Reed was apprehended without incident Monday as he left a city residence, Bello said. He is scheduled to be arraigned at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in City Court.
