Fairport, Irondequoit enter the picture: New York state football rankings for Oct. 9

Two unbeaten teams have been recognized in the New York State Sportswriters Association rankings for the first time this season.

Undefeated Fairport (5-0 in Class AA) and Irondequoit (5-0 in Class A) have entered the picture in their respective classifications. Both teams were mentioned among honorable mentions in the three previous lists.

Section V football rankings: Pair of teams jump to No. 2

Fairport has been a mild surprise in AA after a 3-5 regular season last year. The Red Raiders have allowed only seven points across their last two games, and prior to that defeated sectional hopeful Aquinas 21-20.

Irondequoit's success is a continuation of last year's group that went 6-2 in the regular season before a tough first-round loss to eventual section runner-up Brighton. The Eagles averaged 42 points per game through the first four weeks, but won in a different fashion last weekend by gutting out an 18-15 win over Victor.

Biggest riser: Hilton — There wasn't much movement in the rankings this week, with most of the winners only bumping a spot or two. But the Cadets rebounded from the previous week's loss to McQuaid with a dramatic win over UPrep on a last-second field goal.

Biggest faller: Honeoye Falls-Lima — The Cougars suffered their first loss of the season last week, dropping a crucial Class B matchup against Batavia.
