Going on an authentic African safari is one of the many items left on my long travel bucket list, and while crossing that milestone is gonna be a long way off for me, I've started to put some thought into it. The African savannah covers millions of square miles across numerous countries, and across its expanse there are thousands of lodges, resorts, and safari tours, some better than others. If this is gonna be a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, it's worth splurging on a great resort.
As far as potential bucket-list safari lodges go, this one in Botswana might just be my top contender right now. Welcome to Wilderness Mombo, a deluxe safari lodge that's arguably one of the very best of its kind.
Camille Lamoyeux, aka @luxury_traveler , argues that the Wilderness Mombo might just be the very best safari lodge in the world, a glowing recommendation backed up by endorsements from both Conde Nast and Forbes . Of course, there are plenty of less extravagant safari lodges and safari tours that still offer an incredible experience on a lower budget, but if you're going to go all out and take your safari adventure with a side of five-star luxury, Wilderness Mombo is where it's at. Let's talk about why.
The whole point of going on safari is to see African wildlife up close and personal, and Wilderness Mombo is in the perfect place for wildlife viewing. As Lamoyeux explained, the lodge is located in Botswana's Okavongo Delta, a vast, lush river delta that's teeming with diverse wildlife. Of the "Big Five" safari animals (lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants, and African buffalo), Lamoyeux says she saw four on her very first day!
The Accommodations
While every day of the Lamoyeux family's stay at the lodge was packed full of private safari tours with luxurious amenities (more on that soon), even their accommodations allowed them to get an up-close and personal view of the wildlife. The lodge's "tented rooms," located directly on the savannah, easily put every other "glamping" tent I've ever seen to shame.
Built on a raised platform, the family's beautiful tented lodge had two separate bedrooms with luxurious four-poster canopy beds , along with a fully-furnished living area and a gorgeous bathroom - peep that enormous brass soaking tub. All rooms looked out over the savannah, and the lodge came complete with a private deck and plunge pool, so open that wild animals could easily walk up to it for a visit. Uh... whether or not that's a "pro" or a "con" for you depends a lot on how nervous you are around the wildlife. Either way, there's no denying that you get a "wild" experience!
The Amenities
Obviously, Lamoyeux touched on a few of these in her video: daily private safari tours, gourmet picnics on the savannah, and daily perks like ponchos and hot water bottles to keep guests cozy on their long rides. The Wilderness Mombo website advertises a number of other luxurious attractions and amenities, including stargazing on the savannah, thrilling helicopter safaris, relaxation in the lodge's on-site spa and gym, and sipping on selections from the lodge's deluxe wine cellar. Wilderness Mombo pampers their guests, make no mistake!
Unsurprisingly, this is an extravagantly costly safari lodge, to the tune of several thousand dollars per person per night. Obviously, this is an extremely high-end experience, and not one the average traveler can afford. But if you really want to pull out all of the stops and treat yourself to a once-in-a-lifetime luxury adventure? In that case, Wilderness Mombo seems well worth considering.
