The new MÄVINN pouch ($6.99) from IKEA

    IKEA

While I love IKEA for basic furniture, storage, lighting, and kitchenware, they typically haven't been my first choice for handmade, artisanal decor. If I'm looking for decor along those lines, I'm far more likely to hit up somewhere like World Market or Earthbound, or even my local antique malls.

But IKEA has been branching out into different styles with some of their newest collections, and one brand-new collection in particular is exactly what craft lovers like me have been waiting for. Check out some of these funky new designs!

According to business magazine Fast Company ( @fastcompany on X/Twitter) these colorful pieces come from IKEA's new 17-piece MÄVINN collection , which is set to launch its first release next month. This is the second collection in IKEA's socially-conscious MÄVINN series, which first launched last year with the goal of combining handmade craftsmanship with social entrepreneurship.

    Making a Positive Impact

For their MÄVINN home decor series, IKEA partners with social businesses across Asia to celebrate artisanal workmanship and cultural heritage while creating thousands of jobs for women and marginalized groups in vulnerable communities. Their newest MÄVINN collection was created in collaboration with five social businesses and artisans in India, Bangladesh, and Jordan, and every item in the collection is either woven, braided, or embroidered by hand.

"MÄVINN showcases craft techniques passed down through generations, and it’s amazing to create together and learn from each other with these artisans who have kept these traditions alive," said IKEA designer Paulin Machado in today's press release. "... As a designer, I’m proud to work with a project that helps women grow as skilled professionals and enables families and communities to reach financial independence."

What to Expect in the MÄVINN Collection

The MÄVINN collection includes "a diverse range of products such as baskets, bags, rugs, cushion covers, bedspreads, bathrobes, plant pot hangers , throws, and pouches," all of which are made from cotton or jute sourced from the same area where the artisans operate. Part of the collection will be available in stores and online worldwide come September, while the second half of the collection is set to launch in December.

Because they're handcrafted, every individual MÄVINN piece will have slight variations in detail, infusing each item with its own unique personality. Oh, and did I mention that a number of these items are cat-themed, too? Some of my personal faves from their upcoming collection include Some of my personal standouts included an orange cushion cover with an embroidered cat pattern for $19.99, a classic macrame plant hanger for $6.99, multi-colored bedspreads, pillow covers, and throw blankets made from 100% cotton (ranging from $13-30 by item), and my personal favorite: a literal "cat basket" featuring two cute little cat ears for $17.99.

Whether you're a craft lover, cat lover , or just someone who prefers to buy sustainably sourced home furnishings, there's a lot to look forward to from IKEA's newest collection. I can't wait to see what's included with their first drop next month!
