2nd flamingo sighting reported at Cape Cod beach

DENNIS, Mass. (WPRI) — Cape Cod bird enthusiasts flocked to Chapin Memorial Beach Monday afternoon to catch a glimpse of a rare and unusual visitor.

This is the second time an American flamingo was spotted wading through the water along the Dennis beach this summer, though it’s unclear if it’s the same bird.

The first flamingo sighting was reported in early June. It was believed to be the first time a wild flamingo has visited the Bay State on its own.

The Massachusetts Avian Record Committee has only confirmed two American flamingo sightings in the state’s history. Those date back to the 1960s, however, the committee couldn’t agree on whether either one was wild.

It will be up to the committee to determine if the same flamingo visited twice, or if two different birds decided to take separate trips to Cape Cod. The committee will also try to figure out whether either sighting was of a wild flamingo.

It’s unclear how the flamingo, or flamingos, wound up in Massachusetts, since the birds don’t normally venture far from the tropics.

American flamingos are native to the Caribbean and have known breeding populations in Cuba, Mexico, Venezuela, Bonaire, the British Virgin Islands and the Bahamas, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission .
