Burton discovers long-standing ban on alcohol consumption on city property

The reaction of multiple Burton City Council members during last Tuesday’s meeting could be summed up as stunned silence as the reality hit regarding an ordinance passed in 2001 that makes consumption and/or possession of an open alcohol container on any city property illegal.

It took nearly 30 minutes for council members to understand that the agenda item they were reviewing dealt only with removing the variance option from the recent ordinance addressing Laas-Weeren Park rules that was passed Dec. 12, 2023.
