The Denton ISD school board named Dr. Susannah Holbert O'Bara its lone finalist to be the district's next superintendent, trustees announced Tuesday .

O'Bara will be the first woman to hold the position in Denton ISD's 142-year history. The school board must enact a 21-day waiting period before officially naming her to the position permanently.

O'Bara follows Dr. Jamie Wilson, who was named superintendent emeritus last month.

"Dr. O’Bara is a lifelong resident of our community, which gives her an all-encompassing understanding of our unique, vibrant culture," Denton ISD school board President Barbara Burns said. "As a graduate, teacher, and parent in our district, she understands the needs of our families and excels in seeking solutions to our challenges. Her passion for student learning and staff support have positioned her to be the leader our organization needs to keep us moving forward."

O'Bara served as deputy superintendent last year after holding other leadership roles in Denton ISD. Her first leadership roles in the district were as assistant principal and principal at Ginnings and Hawk elementary schools.
