1-minute voter guide: Elisabeth Epps and Sean Camacho face off in state House District 6

State Rep. Elisabeth Epps faces a challenging re-election battle in her central Denver district after a controversial first term.

State of play: The nonprofit leader filed a lawsuit against her own party's legislative leaders alleging they violated the state's transparency laws and complained that they quashed progressive legislation.

• Her protests against Israel's attack on Gaza temporarily shut down the House's work in a November special session, drawing a reprimand from legislative leaders who sidelined her in the most recent legislative session. She missed much of the session's start this year as she appeared remotely citing an ongoing medical condition.
• A top legislative priority for Epps is a ban on so-called assault weapons , which failed in both sessions during her term.

The other side: Her challenger in the Democratic primary is Sean Camacho, a lawyer and former military intelligence officer.

• If elected, his priority is affordable housing, a pressing concern in the Capitol Hill and Congress Park neighborhoods he would represent.
• He is promising to push progressive policies if elected and is endorsed by the current Senate president and House speaker.

The intrigue: Camacho was a registered Republican until October 2017, according to the Colorado Sun. He became unaffiliated and later registered as a Democrat in August 2019.

• Yet he won the most votes in the caucus process and earned top billing on the June primary ballot.
