Why do Colorado venues crack your can after you purchase the beverage?

DENVER ( KDVR ) — There’s no better way to enjoy a Colorado Rockies game or a concert at Empower Field or Ball Arena during the summer months than with an ice-cold beverage in your hand. Just know that if you do buy a can, the employees will open it for you.

There are a few reasons for that.

For some venues, like Ball Arena, it’s a liability. According to Jim Mulvihill with Kroenke Sports & Entertainment , it’s policy for employees to open any beverage before it’s handed out. This is sometimes a can, but usually at Ball Arena, it’s a twist-off cap.

“The reason we unscrew caps is to make receptacles less dangerous if someone were to hurl one. This is a common practice at most larger-capacity sports and entertainment venues,” Mulvihill told FOX31.

After all, it’s not exactly easy to grip and throw a can that’s not filled with air – just like a deflated soccer ball won’t go as far when it’s kicked.

According to Mulvihill, caps are also unscrewed to reduce litter and prevent slipping hazards.

In places like Empower Field at Mile High and Coors Field, the policy of opening a beverage is the same, but for a slightly different reason.

“Alcoholic beverages are meant to be enjoyed within the venue and are opened at time of purchase to ensure they’re consumed on-premises,” Aramark Sports + Entertainment told FOX31 in an official statement.

Ultimately, a cracked can doesn’t make that much of a difference, venues are just trying to avoid drinks being thrown or taken home.
