DENVER (KDVR) — The Colorado Department of Transportation confirmed that the drivers who illegally weave in and out of express lanes on Interstate 25 are seeing the repercussions, and it’s leading to fewer violations.

Last September, CDOT began issuing warnings for drivers who were caught weaving through the solid white lines on C-470 from I-25 to Wadsworth Boulevard and I-25 from U.S. 36 to E-470.

Express lane violations down 60%, but one driver fined 53 times

With the help of road sensors and cameras, over 40,000 warnings were issued in just 20 days.

That grace period ended Oct. 1, 2023. Nine months later, the agency has issued $40,478,309 in fines to violators, a CDOT spokesperson confirmed to FOX31.

The agency said it is collecting on about two-thirds of the fines issued. Crossing the solid white line costs a $75 fine, and that doubles if it isn’t paid within 20 days. The fine can reach up to $250, the limit allowed by state statute.

“Our data shows that violations have decreased by 75% since the program started, and 81% of those who violate don’t violate a second time. So, it’s pretty clear that it’s modifying behavior,” the CDOT spokesperson told FOX31 in an email.

So far, the fines collected have netted some $16.4 million, which CDOT said will be used for safety improvements, operations and maintenance costs, and for expanded public outreach.
