The department posted about the shooting at 8:52 p.m. and soon said the victim was pronounced dead on the scene. One person was taken into custody, police said.

The area is near the Denver Rescue Mission 48th Avenue Center , and the center’s public relations manager confirmed the shooting happened outside the shelter.

“Denver Rescue Mission is deeply saddened by the tragic events outside of the 48th Avenue Center on Monday evening. The Mission is working with the Denver Police Department to aid in their investigation of the incident. We will remain steadfast in keeping the safety of the Mission’s guests, employees and volunteers a high priority, as we serve the community’s most vulnerable,” said the Denver Rescue Mission in an email.

It is still unclear if the victim and the suspect had any connection to the shelter.

Police said the investigation was “in its very early stages” and did not immediately provide more information.
