DENVER (KDVR) — A vigil organized by friends and colleagues paid tribute to a Denver man who was shot and killed while working at a RiNo restaurant and bar Wednesday night.

“There are so many people who loved Todd and who Todd loved,” Brandi McMichael, vigil attendee, said on Monday night.

William “Todd” Kidd was remembered by those who knew him as a protector and defender.

On Wednesday at 6:40 p.m., Denver police say a fight broke out just outside of Federales, a restaurant at 29th and Larimer streets in the River North Art District. Kidd, who worked there as a bouncer, stepped in to intervene and was shot. He was taken to the hospital and later died.

The restaurant community came together to host a candlelight vigil to honor Kidd’s memory and the impact he had, not only on his coworkers but patrons at the restaurant.

“I’ve known him throughout the community for 15 to 20 years and he’s one of those people that every time you walk by him, he’s got a hug, he’s got a smile, he’s got a good word of encouragement,” McMichael said.

A GoFundMe has been set up for Kidd’s family and had raised over $20,000 in four days.

Police say the suspect is 14-year-old Stephen Marquez , who also goes by “Esco.” As of Monday night, he had not been arrested.
