Denver Broncos 2024 Training Camp Preview

As the Denver Broncos officially close the book on one of the worst trades in NFL history by releasing Russell Wilson this off-season, this team can begin to rebuild the pieces necessary to once again be a contender in the AFC. They appear to have their franchise Quarterback now in Bo Nix out of Auburn, but will he be the day-one starter right away? With that question looming along with others, especially on defense, where does this team fall? Let’s talk about it in the Broncos 2024 training camp preview.

    Three Position Battles To Watch

Quarterback: Jarrett Stidham, Bo Nix, Zach Wilson

This is the million-dollar question if you are a Broncos fan entering training camp. On paper, you would expect Sean Payton to want to roll out Bo Nix right away, however, this could be detrimental to his development. The offensive line is overrated, the weapons outside are not good and the tight ends are the worst in the league. It might be best to let someone like Stidham roll through the first part of the schedule to let Nix get acclimated. The wild card in all of this is Zach Wilson, who is still very young and has loads of NFL starts. If he gets hot during camp, he’s the sneaky option to win the job.

Cornerback Opposite Patrick Surtain II: Riley Moss, Damarri Mathis, Levi Wallace, Kris Abrams-Draine

If the Broncos and Payton were smart, they’d trade PS2 for a king’s ransom of picks to fully fund the rebuild.

Sorry, off-topic for a second. There has been a noticeable hole on the opposite side of the field from Surtain since he entered the league. Denver has gotten younger at the position, which could be a good thing if they develop well. Levi Wallace came over from the Steelers, Riley Moss is a second-year player who played sparingly last season, but my money is on Kris Abrams-Draine. I loved his stuff coming out , and has the potential to soak up all the information PS2 has to offer. KAD has the highest upside out of the available options.

Running Back: Javonte Williams, Samaje Perine, Jaleel McLaughlin, Audric Estime

This town certainly ain’t big enough for the four of them. I know that the Broncos have hopes for Audric Estime entering training camp, but he stinks. He’s so bad he had Daniel Jeremiah basically admitting he doesn’t watch tape in regards to his speed. He’s out. I’d also cut Perine, he’s basically Estime but with NFL experience.

It’s a shame that Javonte Williams hasn’t really regained his form after his knee injury. The guy in this room who I believe has the highest upside is McLaughlin. He is electric when he touches the ball, and can make a play out of nowhere. If he can work on his pass protection during the Broncos training camp, he’d get my vote to be the starter.

Ready To Breakout/Fantasy Sleeper: Marvin Mims

Marvin Mims gets both my ready to breakout and fantasy sleeper tag for the Broncos. Last year, we saw the big play potential with multiple touchdowns of over 20+ yards, including kick return touchdowns as well. Mims has an opportunity to step up and be the WR2 in a room that is lacking talent, especially if the Broncos decide to move on from Courtland Sutton. If your league gets points for punt/kick return yards/touchdowns, I think Mims is a must-grab in the later rounds. He’s also a viable option for best-ball leagues (which are the superior options for fantasy football).

    Rookie To Watch: Jonah Elliss

Trey wrote the draft profile on Jonah Elliss and sang his praises for being young with lots of upside. He couldn’t have gone to a better team, as this franchise is lacking a dominant pass rusher. Elliss has an opportunity to see the field early and can establish himself as one of the gems of the draft class. Jonathon Cooper had a good year last year with 8.5 sacks and Nik Bonitto with 8.0, but Cooper is heading into a contract year and could be a nice trade chip, and Bonitto feels like a flash in the pan. If Denver moves off Cooper, Elliss can easily slide into that role.

I don’t believe there is a ton to be optimistic about with the Denver Broncos heading into training camp in 2024. Are there some pieces on this team that I like? Sure. However, there are massive holes on this roster that this team failed to address. Like it or not, this is a team that is in a rebuild and will not be contenders this year. If this team wakes up and realizes this and sells off some pieces, the better they will be.
