Payton: 3 quarterbacks will ‘possibly’ make 53-man roster

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (KDVR) — As the Denver Broncos welcomed fans for the first time this year, the competition to make the initial roster was stepped up.

Welcome to Training Camp 2024.

Entering his second season as head coach, Sean Payton has made it clear he is in search of the best 53 players to make the roster.

“I think young and hungry can be very dangerous,” Payton said after Friday’s practice. “I am anxious and excited to see how this team develops.”

The quarterbacks continued to rotate practice days getting reps with the first team. On Friday, fans saw Zach Wilson for the first time in orange and blue. Jarrett Stidham and rookie Bo Nix followed behind.

When asked if Payton could see the Broncos carrying three quarterbacks on the roster this season: “Possibly. Good question. Possibly.”

• Safety Brandon Jones tweaked his hamstring, Sean Payton said after practice .
• Cornerback Patrick Surtain II, who is eligible for a contract extension, said Denver has made it clear they want him here long-term. He’s not putting a deadline on any contract talks.
• Country music superstar Kenny Chesney attended training camp Friday. This weekend will be the sixth time Chesney has performed at Empower Field at Mile High, the most of any performer in the stadium’s history. Chesney last performed at the Broncos’ stadium in 2022.

Broncos training camp continues through mid-August , with most days open for fan attendance.
