Now is one of the best times to trot onto a horseback riding trail and soak up some of Colorado's stunning scenery — and abundant wildflowers — atop a saddle.

Here are four of our favorite riding tours under an hour's drive from Denver:

    Bear Mountain Stables (Conifer)

    • Nestled on a beautiful property in Jefferson County, this family-owned facility offers peaceful, guided rides year-round through beautiful pine forests, rock outcroppings and aspen groves.
    • The experience — suited for beginners and experienced riders alike — includes outfitting and a lesson. The trail time is between 1.25-1.5 hours.
    • Price: $85 per rider. Reservations required. (All children must be at least 9 years old and over 4 feet tall.)

    Chatfield Stables (Littleton)

    • Located at Chatfield State Park, enjoy guided trail rides with scenic views of the rolling foothills and expansive reservoir. Rides range from 1-2 hours and are available year-round.
    • Price: $60-$110 per rider, depending on trail ride time. $30 for a 15-minute hand-led pony ride for kids ages 2-7. Cash only. Reservations strongly encouraged.

    12 Mile Stables (Aurora)

    • This company provides guided tours year-round on more than 27 miles of trails at Cherry Creek State Park, known for its natural prairie and wetland environment.
    • One unique offering is its sunset and dinner ride. Before a 1.5-hour ride, enjoy a cowboy-style dinner with brisket, baked beans, potato salad and dinner rolls. ($94)
    • Price: $55-$94 per person, depending on length and type of ride. $35 for a 20-minute pony ride.

    Bear Creek Stables (Morrison)

    • Located in Bear Creek Lake Park, these guided trails offer beautiful views of Red Rocks Amphitheater, the foothills and downtown Denver. Rides range from 1-1.5 hours.
    • Small or large groups are welcome.
    • Price: $60-$80 per rider. $40 for a 30-minute pony ride.
