Broncos quarterback competition already has an early development

Since training camp kicked off last week, the Denver Broncos had been going through a rotation of Jarrett Stidham, Bo Nix and Zach Wilson taking reps with the first-team offense in that order. The first day was Stidham, followed by Nix on Day 2 and Wilson on Day 3.

Following that rotation, it would have been Wilson’s turn to run with the first-team offense on Tuesday. Instead, it was Stidham with the starters one day after Nix ran with the starters. Wilson worked with the third-team offense.

Despite the apparent development in the QB battle, Broncos coach Sean Payton insisted he had nothing to share on the topic.

“No news to announce there,” Payton said when asked about the rotation following Tuesday’s practice.

Payton was asked if Wilson will return to getting first-team reps and he said, “We’ll see.”

Payton did indicate last week that at some point during camp, not all three QBs would continue getting first-team reps.

“[W]e’ve kind of been in this pretty consistent pattern and I think it’s hard for that to stay the same throughout all of camp,” Payton said last Saturday. “That’s all.”

Payton also hinted last week that looming QB rotation changes might answer some questions that he’s been reluctant to answer.

“Nothing to report right now,” Payton said Saturday. “Those guys are working hard and they’re competing. I’m not going to give updates, daily updates or weekly updates. There will be a time when you’ll see the rotation begin to change in a certain way. At some point, it’ll clear itself up, but nothing to report right now.”

If Nix runs with the first-team offense on Wednesday and Wilson remains with the third-string unit, that will likely serve as confirmation that the team’s quarterback competition is now down to two finalists: Stidham and Nix.
