Dave Grohl recently covered a Tenacious D song as Jack Black and Kyle Gass face controversy in Australia following Gass’ gallows humor on stage. During the acoustic set of a Foo Fighters show in Denver, Grohl covered the Tenacious D track “Tribute,” revealing that he actually had a hand in making it.

“I only played the drums on that song,” he told the crowd. However, for the cover, he also sang while playing the drums. Watch the moment below in a fan-captured video.

The Tenacious D controversy came about during a tour stop in Sydney, Australia, where Jack Black brought out a cake to celebrate Kyle Gass’ birthday on stage. When asked to make a wish, Gass made a dark joke about the attempt on Donald Trump’s life, which occurred in Pennsylvania hours before on July 13. The joke—admittedly made in poor taste—”blindsided” Black and caused an Australian senator to call for their deportation from the country.

Jack Black made a statement following the incident. “I was blindsided by what was said at the show on Sunday,” he wrote in a post on Instagram on July 16. “I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form. After much reflection, I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour, and all future creative plans are on hold. I am grateful to the fans for their support and understanding.”

Kyle Gass also put out a statement following the incident and the tour cancelation, but has since deleted the post from social media. He initially wrote, “I’m incredibly sorry for my severe lack of judgement” in the apology, but it was gone by July 19. It is unclear why he deleted the post.

In the wake of the comments, Tenacious D canceled the remainder of their Spicy Meatball Tour. Jack Black also shared that all creative endeavors would be put on hold for the foreseeable future. There’s no word if Black and Gass have split up, or if they’re working things out privately. In the meantime, there’s Dave Grohl giving fans a little shot of Tenacious D to hold them over.
