    DeRidder native now consulate general in Casablanca, will speak at War Memorial Civic Center

    The U.S. Consulate General in Casablanca is DeRidder native Marissa D. Scott-Torres.

    The community is invited to hear remarks by Scott-Torres at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 27, at the War Memorial Civic Center in DeRidder. This event is sponsored by Grace Church, the Beauregard Museum, and the city of DeRidder-City Hall.

    Scott-Torres took leadership of the U.S. Consulate in Casablanca on Aug. 10, 2023.

    She is a career diplomat and has spent most of her career working in Africa on public diplomacy and media relations. Her previous assignments were Djibouti, the Dominican Republic, Algeria, Niger, Cabo Verde, and South Africa. Scott-Torres also served as Senior Advisor on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility in the State Department’s Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs.

    Upon her appointment to her current post, Scott-Torres said, “The Consulate is an integral part of the U.S. Mission in Morocco, and I look forward to supporting our bilateral relationship through the broad range of consular services, educational and cultural programs, and commercial resources we offer in Casablanca.”

    Scott-Torres holds a bachelor’s degree in English and Spanish language from Dillard University. She has a Master’s degree in International Relations from the Maxwell School at Syracuse University. She also holds a Diploma of Hispanic Studies from the University of Salamanca (Spain), an Advanced Certificate in Conflict Resolution from Syracuse, and a Certificate in Strategic Communications and Public Relations from Portland State University.

    Scott-Torres is a 1995 DeRidder High School graduate. She is married with three children. Her parents are Marvin and Malissa Scott, of DeRidder.
