DES MOINES, Iowa (TCN) -- A 16-year-old is being charged with first-degree murder after he was arrested for allegedly fatally stabbing his 19-year-old brother this week.

According to the Des Moines Police Department, on June 11 at around 10:15 a.m., officers and paramedics were called to an apartment on Oakridge Drive regarding a stabbing. When they arrived, they located a 19-year-old male injured inside, and he was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition. The victim, who was identified as Abdelmagid Elzubeir, later died at the hospital from his wounds.

Police said they found the 16-year-old suspect "within minutes" of their arrival and took him into custody. Detectives allege the suspect, Mohamed Elzubeir, "with premeditation, stabbed the victim in the neck."

Mohamed Elzubeir and Abdelmagid Elzubeir are brothers.

The Des Moines Register reports Mohamed Elzubeir is being charged as an adult, though he remains in custody at a juvenile detention facility on $1 million bond.

Their father described Abdelmagid Elzubeir as a "good boy." He told the Des Moines Register that his son was supposed to graduate from high school this year.

According to their father, Abdelmagid Elzubeir had dreams of going to college in New York and becoming a doctor.
