DES MOINES, Iowa — Police in Des Moines responded to just over 10% more fireworks-related complaints over the first few days of July in 2024 than the same period last year.

Sgt. Paul Parizek the Public Information Officer for the Des Moines Police Department said officers responded to 721 fireworks-related complaints between 6 p.m. on July 1st and 6:00 a.m. July 5th. During that time, about 25% of the total calls for service were fireworks-related.

Sgt. Parizek said since June 20th, 52 fireworks ordinance violation citations have been issued in Des Moines. The fine for a violation was recently lowered from $600 to $200.
