Record-breaking people attend Goodguys 33rd Speedway Motors Heartland National

DES MOINES, Iowa- Des Moines is going back in time this weekend for the Goodguys 33rd annual Speedway Motors Heartland National.

Over 5,000 vintage vehicles are on display at the Iowa State Fairgrounds until Sunday July 7th. Two of the cars on display were built by Andy Leach, a Nebraska native and owner of Cal Automotive Creations.

Leach grew up attending the Speedway Motors Heartland National as a spectator and now he sees the other side. He’s showcasing a 1967 Corvette Roadster and a 1968 Jeep Super Wagoneer. He spent three years each building both cars.

“It’s awesome to get all of the people and the reaction that everyone gets with our cars. It’s really rewarding,” he said.

Leach also said he hasn’t seen the car show attract this many people in previous years. Goodguys is expecting tens of thousands of spectators to attend.

Director of Marketing Operations for Goodguys, Steven Bunker, said they’re already seeing record-breaking numbers that surpassed their expectations. Over 5,000 spectators attended on Friday, which is typically the attendance they reach on Saturday.

“I think being on Fourth of July [weekend] really helps this show out a bunch. The location, the Fairgrounds, there’s a lot of car enthusiasts here,” said Bunker.

And spectators say the enthusiasm at the Iowa State Fairgrounds is unparalleled in comparison to other Goodguy events across the country.

Jay Swaroff is a Charles City native who attended every Goodguys show for the last 50 years.

“The cars are incredible, the people are incredible. The cars are the glue that hold the people together. Cars don’t talk and you can enjoy them and you can talk with someone if you’ve got a similar car,” said Swaroff.

The show is taking place on Saturday from 8AM to 8PM. They’re ending the night with a fireworks display.

Spectators can also witness the show from 8AM to 3PM on Sunday.

Tickets can be purchased on their website and are $25 for people over age 13, $10 for people between ages 7 and 12, and free for anyone 6 and under.
