    Vote: Des Moines Register Iowa Ortho Athletes of the Week for July 1-7

    Last week saw district play begin for Iowa high school baseball teams in Classes 1A and 2A.

    The regular season is starting to wind down for baseball teams in 3A and 4A, and for softball teams from across the state. Regional softball games and 3A and 4A baseball substate play will begin this week.

    There were several standout performances during last week's baseball and softball competition.

    Here are the Des Moines Register's Iowa Ortho female and male Athlete of the Week candidates for the week of July 1-7. Register readers vote to determine the winners, who will be announced at the end of the week.

    Kennedy Borud, Southeast Polk

    Borud had a big game offensively for the Class 5A No. 10 Southeast Polk softball team during a 9-0 victory over 1A No. 6 Sigourney on July 5 at Pleasant Hill.

    Borud homered and drove in five runs for the Rams. She also walked, was hit by a pitch and scored twice.

    Sophia Schlader, Waukee Northwest

    Schlader was a dominant force in the circle for the 5A No. 5 Waukee Northwest softball team during a 5-0 victory over 4A No. 3 Norwalk as part of a doubleheader sweep over the Warriors on July 3 at Norwalk.

    Schlader tossed a two-hit shutout with 15 strikeouts and just two walks in seven innings as the winning pitcher.

    Katie Pilcher, Cedar Rapids Xavier

    Pilcher was an RBI machine for the Xavier softball team during a 13-0 victory over West Delaware on July 2 at Cedar Rapids.

    Pilcher drove in eight runs for the Saints after hitting two home runs in three at-bats.

    Malia Yoder, Hillcrest Academy

    Yoder was perfect at the plate, and she was also the winning pitcher during Hillcrest Academy's 14-7 victory over Columbus on July 1 at Columbus Junction.

    Yoder went 5-for-5 at the plate with one double. She scored and drove in three runs at the plate.

    Yoder also struck out nine batters and only allowed two earned runs as the winning pitcher.

    Carly Goodwin, Sigourney

    Goodwin was masterful in the circle for the Sigourney softball team during a 5-0 victory over Seymour on July 1 at Sigourney.

    Goodwin fired a two-hit shutout, and she racked up 19 strikeouts with no walks in seven innings. She also drove in one run at the plate.

    Carter Geffre, Ames

    Geffre came up clutch at the plate, and he was an overpowering presence on the mound for the Ames baseball team during a 1-0 victory over Cedar Falls on July 5 at Ames.

    Geffre hit a walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to win the game. He finished the night a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, with one double and two singles to go along with his home run.

    On the mound, Geffre struck out 17 batters with just three walks, and he limited the Tigers to just three hits in 7 2/3 scoreless innings of work.

    Talan Priester, North Union

    Priester had a huge game at the plate for the North Union baseball team during an 18-0 drubbing of West Hancock in the Class 1A District 6 quarterfinals on July 6 at Armstrong.

    Priester hit three doubles and walked once in his four plate appearances. He ended the night with an impressive seven RBIs, along with three runs scored.

    Dawson Glaser, Nashua-Plainfield

    Glaser had his "A" game going on the mound for the Nashua-Plainfield baseball team during a 7-0 victory over North Fayette Valley on July 1 at Nashua.

    Glaser went all seven innings and gave up two hits in earning the shutout victory. He ended the night with 14 strikeouts and no walks.

    Glaser also doubled once and drove in two runs on offense.

    Javon Rominger, Ottumwa

    Rominger turned in a big game with the bat for the Ottumwa baseball team during a 6-2 victory over Davenport West on July 6 at Davenport.

    Rominger was a perfect 4-for-4 for the Bulldogs during the win. He hit one triple, scored twice and drove in one run.

    Lincoln Meyers, Cedar Rapids Kennedy

    Meyers helped the 4A No. 1 Cedar Rapids Kennedy baseball team roll to a 17-2 victory over Independence in five innings on July 3 at Independence.

    Meyers was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a home run during the victory. He drove in six runs and scored twice for the Cougars.
