DES MOINES, IOWA — The Des Moines Police Department is releasing the name of a man whose body was recovered from the Des Moines River near downtown earlier this week.

Police were first called out on the morning of Friday, July 12th on a report of a person struggling in the Raccoon River near SW 2nd Street – just blocks from the confluence with the Des Moines River. Police say the person disappeared beneath the water and didn’t resurface. Boats were launched to search the area, but the effort was called off due to debris hazards in the water.

On Friday, July 13th, officers were called out to the Des Moines River near SE 6th Street on a report of a body in the water. Authorities were able to launch a boat and recovered the body of an adult male.

On Wednesday, the Des Moines Police Department identified the body pulled from the river as 39-year-old Christopher Lee Sheets of Des Moines. Police say the cause and manner of his death remain under investigation.
