Local group gifts adaptive bicycles to 5 children with special needs

DES MOINES, Iowa (WHO) — Variety- the Children’s Charity gave away five bikes on Wednesday to children with special needs.

The event took place at the Easter Lake Northshore Playground in Des Moines. It was launched in April and is considered the country’s first all-accessible beach with no staircases, an all-inclusive playground, and specialized equipment for people with special needs.

All five bikes were from Rifton and were customized with mobility equipment specific to the children and their needs.

The bikes will help the kids strengthen their muscles, improve their coordination and balance, and work on their motor skills. It also allows them to socialize with their peers.

“It’s not just about providing a bike and for the child to be out and about. It’s about the physical therapy that goes hand in hand because they’re building up the strength in their legs, and they’re building up the strength in their core, that will eventually allow them to be a little more independent,” said Sheri McMichael, the executive director of Variety.

These bikes cost more than $2,000 and most of the time are not covered by insurance, which is why undergoing initiatives like this are important.
