Add looking at the sky to your Sunday morning routine this weekend.

The next full moon occurs on Sunday, July 21, exactly one month after June's Strawberry moon.

The National Weather Service in Des Moines is forecasting a mostly cloudy night on Saturday, and a partly sunny Sunday with a slight chance of thunderstorms in Des Moines and Ames as of July 18. Iowa City is expected to have a mostly cloudy Saturday night followed by a partly sunny Sunday. In northwestern Iowa's Sioux City, expect cloudy conditions and a chance of thunderstorms on Saturday evening and another chance for thunderstorms after 1 p.m. Sunday, according to NWS.

When is the next full moon this month?

The full moon will be on Sunday, July 21 at 5:17 a.m. Iowa time, according to NASA.

What is the next full moon called?

Sunday’s full moon is known as the Buck moon. It gets its name from when new bucks start to get their antlers, according to USA TODAY. It is also sometimes called the thunder moon.

Why is the moon red or orange?

Have you spotted a moon with a more vibrant color? One reason may be due to its placement in the sky. A moon “tends to have a more yellow or orange hue” when it’s low in the sky, according to NASA. That’s because the light emitted from the moon travels a longer distance through the atmosphere, and in doing so, shorter, blue wavelengths of light are scattered, explains NASA. “Dust or pollution can also deepen the reddish color,” according to NASA.

The moon is also closer to the celestial equator and the Earth’s horizon in the summer, according to the Austin American-Statesman.
