A crash on the east side of Des Moines killed a 47-year-old Des Moines woman and injured four other people Saturday night, according to a news release from the Des Moines Police Department.

It was the city's 11th traffic-related fatality of the year, the release from Sgt. Paul Parizek said.

Investigators believe the accident was triggered by the 28-year-old driver of a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado pickup who was allegedly involved in a hit-and-run crash, fled the scene at a high rate of speed and then hit the car driven by the woman who died, according to new information released Sunday by Des Moines police.

The crash happened at about 8:03 p.m. Saturday, the initial release said, and patrol officers and Des Moines Fire Department rescue personnel responded to the scene at the intersection of Second and Holcomb avenues, which is near Birdland Pool.

The 47-year-old woman was dead at the scene, the initial release said. Fire department medics transported four people with serious injuries ― two adults and two juveniles ― to local hospitals.

According to the updated release , a preliminary investigation indicates the hit-and-run crash happened near the intersection of Second and Corning avenues. The pickup then allegedly fled southbound, crossing into oncoming traffic and crashing into a northbound 2005 Toyota Sienna van driven by the 47-year-old.

The van carried three passengers, a 45-year-old female, a 10-year-old male and a 7-year-old male, who all were injured, as was the pickup driver. All remained hospitalized as of 11 a.m. Sunday in conditions ranging from serious to critical.

The crash prompted the temporary closure of Second Avenue between Hull and Franklin avenues late Saturday.

The police department's traffic unit is investigating the crash. Police said more information will be shared when it's available.
