A Des Moines nurse charged last year with conspiracy to deliver controlled substances has agreed to stop practicing.

Jennifer Spieker, 42, of Des Moines has signed an agreement with the Iowa Board of Nursing in which she has agreed to stop practicing nursing and have her license placed on “suspended” status.

The board says Spieker is currently under investigation, but it has not imposed any charges against her or publicly disclosed the reasons for its investigation or the license suspension. Her suspension is to remain in effect until further notice from the board.

Police records indicate that officers searched Spieker’s home last November and reported finding one ounce of methamphetamine inside her bedroom among her possessions. According to the records, officers also found “a large sum of U.S. currency, digital scales and packaging materials.”

The officers also reported finding “multiple containers of loose, various prescription pills,” including 100 pills that were prescription-only. The pill bottles did not have Spieker’s name or personal information of them and were not in the same containers in which they would have originally been dispensed, according to court records.

According to court records, Spieker was allegedly working in Iowa as a traveling nurse at the time, taking assignments from an employment agency and earning $100,000 per year.

Immediately after the search, Spieker was charged with conspiracy to deliver a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and unlawful possession of a prescription drug. As part of the same criminal case, two other individuals who allegedly lived at, or did business at, the same house where Spieker lived are facing drug charges.

In March, with Spieker released from jail and awaiting trial, the Iowa Department of Correctional Services reported she had violated the terms of her pretrial release agreement by testing positive for methamphetamine.

A trial in Spieker’s criminal case is scheduled for Sept. 9, 2024.
